Young Researchers Important Element of Papua Land Sustainable Developments
Manokwari, October 5, 2018 – West Papua Province’s noble intention to become a Conservation Province should not be a stop at the declaration made on October 19, 2015. The West Papua Provincial Administration should, therefore, invite all elements of the society to take part in realizing it.
Those who should play their roles are either academic or other institutional researchers conducting their researches in the land of Papua. They will, later on, work together with other elements of the society to harmonize the legal umbrella, Bylaw on Special Sustainable Developments in West Papua Province. Its preparation is now still underway.
“Based on the rationale, we are all local administrations, universities, NGOs and the people are to join forces in every development, so that the conservation province is running well,” Regional Secretary to West Papua Province, Nataniel D. Mandacan, said on Saturday (06/10/2018) in a written speech by Governor Dominggus Mandacan in a Young Researcher Seminar in the Land of Papua 2018 in Manokwari.
He said in the speech that though Papua and West Papua Provinces are administratively separated, similarities in ecology and geography have allowed both provinces to have a common vision for maintaining the biodiversity contained therein. The reason is that both provinces give contributions to 50% of the biodiversity in Indonesia.
“The young researchers in the Land of Papua must be able to develop a practical approach to utilizing and protecting the species and if possible to restoring the endangered species,” he said.
In line with it, Head of West Papua Regional Research and Development Agency Charlie D Hetaubun said increasing the capacity of young researchers in the Land of Papua needs to be encouraged to develop their research in an effort to support sustainable development programs. Therefore, a special forum for Papua young researchers is needed to present the results of research such as Seminar.
“In addition to increasing the capacity and interest in the research and accelerating the regeneration process, the Land of Papua’s young researcher seminar is aimed to provide opportunities for the young researchers and final-year students to present the results of the study, by selecting at least five writings of the best research results to be presented in ICBE 2018, “he said.
On the same occasion, Chairperson of the Committee on Papua Young Researcher Seminar, Keliopas Krey, expressed hope that all young researchers could present their smart and innovative ideas as well as help develop Papua’s soil conservation.
“The young researchers must also become agents of change for the developments in the land of Papua, young researchers are also considered as future generations in the land who will continue to voice West Papua as conservation and sustainable province,” he said.
In one day seminar, the researchers whose works were in the top 40, presented their works divided into 3 groups. The outline of conducted research is concerning Biodiversity, Eco Tourism and Creative Economy.
Director of EcoNusa Foundation, Melda Wita Sitompul, said the EcoNusa Foundation would continue to provide full supports for the seminar. The reason is that the Papua land’s biodiversity should continuously become the center of attention in the sustainable developments. One of its strategies is to base on the data and results of scientific research.
“The land of Papua is rich in Biodiversity. The researchers should be able to make this region as their laboratory because there will be many new things that can give contributions to science and basis of consideration for sustainable developments,” he said.
